5 days 5 destinations Jade Williams Updated May 11, 2026

Five days for four mates through the South Island's adventure capital — jet boats on the Shotover, the canonical Milford day-cruise, paragliding off Coronet, Hooker Valley to the Mt Cook glacier face, and Wānaka stargazing. Pure group-trip energy. Bike rack and surf rack on the campervan.

Itinerary

Day 1 · Thursday, October 8, 2026
1
09:00 - 10:00
Car Rental
Campervan pickup at ZQN
JUCY or Britz 4-berth — they live at the airport. Group of four splits the cost; one drives, three sleep on the way in.
2
11:00 - 12:30
Lunch
Fergburger + Mrs Ferg gelato
The Big Al with a side of fries. Yes, the queue. Skip to Mrs Ferg next door for hokey-pokey gelato after — no line, same family.
3
13:00 - 15:30
Jet Boat
Shotover Jet through Skippers Canyon
25 minutes of 360-degree spins through the canyon walls in a six-seat jet. The full-group bachelor-trip activation. Book the 13:00 slot — water levels are highest in the afternoon.
4
16:00 - 17:30
Gondola + Luge
Skyline Queenstown + Luge
Up Bob's Peak gondola, three runs on the alpine luge, beers at the top deck overlooking the Remarkables. Group pricing on the multi-luge bundle.
5
18:00 - 19:30
Wine Tasting
Gibbston Valley Winery
20 min drive into the Gibbston basin — Pinot Noir country. The cave tasting room (literally inside a hillside cave) is the gimmick that's worth the gimmick.
6
20:30 - 22:30
Dinner
The Bunker
Hidden upstairs entrance off Cow Lane — fireplace, dark wood, locally famous Pinot list. Order the wood-fired ribeye to share.
Day 2 · Friday, October 9, 2026
7
06:30 - 07:00
Breakfast
Coffee + breakfast burrito from Vudu Café
Open at 6:30 sharp. Eat in the campervan as you head for the road.
8
07:00 - 11:00
Scenic Drive
Queenstown → Te Anau → Milford via Hwy 94
The Milford Road — one of the world's great drives. Stop at Mirror Lakes, the Chasm, the Homer Tunnel. Watch for kea (alpine parrots) at the tunnel-mouth carpark.
9
11:30 - 13:30
Fjord Cruise
Milford Sound nature cruise
Two-hour cruise to the Tasman Sea entrance — Mitre Peak, Stirling Falls, fur seals on Seal Rock. Pre-book the smaller-boat operators (Mitre Peak Cruises); the big buses are crowded.
10
14:00 - 16:30
Kayaking
Sea kayak Harrison Cove
After the cruise, kayak two-up under the waterfalls and around the fjord's most photographed cove. Wetsuits included. Don't drop your phone.
11
17:00 - 20:00
Scenic Drive
Milford → Te Anau campsite
Drive back out to Te Anau. Sleep in the van at the Lakeview Holiday Park — hot showers, beer in the camp kitchen, lake views.
12
20:30 - 22:00
Dinner
Redcliff Café, Te Anau
Sod-roof cottage that became a local institution — wild Fiordland venison, blue cod, decent Pinot list. Group of four fits one of the front booths.
Day 3 · Saturday, October 10, 2026
13
04:30 - 10:00
Sunrise Hike
Roy's Peak summit before sunrise
Headlamp start at 04:30 — 5.5 hours round-trip, the canonical Instagram shot at the false summit at sunrise. Don't actually go to the true summit; it's another hour and barely better.
14
11:00 - 12:30
Brunch
Big Fig Wānaka
Lakefront café with the best post-hike brunch in town — eggs benedict and a stack of pancakes. Sit outside.
15
13:30 - 15:30
Lake Swim + Hang
Glendhu Bay swim + That Wānaka Tree
Drive 15 min west to Glendhu Bay for a clean lake swim. Stop at That Wānaka Tree on the way back for the obligatory four-mates lined-up photo.
16
16:00 - 17:00
Check-in
Wānaka campsite — Glendhu Bay Motor Camp
Lakefront campsite ten minutes outside town. Park the van, light a fire (DOC fire restrictions permitting), watch the alpenglow on the Buchanan Range.
17
19:30 - 21:30
Dinner
Francesca's Italian Kitchen
Pizza and pasta the way you actually want it on day 3 of a mates' trip — wood-fired oven, share-plates, the ribollita is the surprise hit.
18
22:00 - 23:30
Stargazing
Lake Wānaka stargazing
Walk down to the lakeshore — the South Island is one of the world's clearest dark-sky regions, and the Milky Way reflects off the lake on still nights. Bring a beer, lie flat.
Day 4 · Sunday, October 11, 2026
19
08:00 - 11:00
Scenic Drive
Wānaka → Mt Cook via Lindis Pass
Three hours through tussock country and over Lindis Pass — peak South Island moonscape. Park at the Hermitage in Mt Cook Village.
20
11:30 - 14:30
Day Hike
Hooker Valley Track
10km return, three swing-bridges over glacial rivers, the trail ends at the terminal lake of the Hooker Glacier with icebergs floating in it. Easy gradient. Bring sandwiches.
21
15:00 - 17:30
Glacier Boat
Tasman Glacier Explorer iceberg cruise
Short 4WD bus to the Tasman terminal lake, then 90 min cruising between the icebergs that calve off the longest glacier in NZ. Some of them you can touch.
22
18:00 - 18:30
Check-in
Aoraki Court Motel
Park the van, grab actual beds for a night — group of four splits a family unit with two bedrooms.
23
19:00 - 21:00
Dinner
Hermitage Hotel — Panorama Restaurant
Only real restaurant for 100km. The view of Mt Cook from the dining room at sunset does the heavy lifting; the South Island lamb is solid.
24
21:30 - 23:00
Stargazing
Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve
The world's largest International Dark Sky Reserve. Walk five minutes from the motel for clean horizon — Magellanic Clouds visible to the naked eye.
Day 5 · Monday, October 12, 2026
25
08:30 - 10:00
Scenic Drive
Mt Cook → Lake Tekapo
90 minutes east along the southern shore of Lake Pukaki — the turquoise from the glacial flour is unreal. Stop at the Mt Cook salmon farm for fresh sashimi at the highway-side stall.
26
10:30 - 12:30
Hot Pools
Tekapo Springs hot pools
Three hot pools overlooking the lake + the Church of the Good Shepherd next door. Group rate gets cheaper with four. Soak away the Roy's Peak DOMS.
27
13:00 - 14:30
Lunch
Greasy Joe's, Tekapo
Burger joint with a deck over the lake. Loaded fries, group beers, debate the best moment of the trip.
28
15:00 - 17:30
Scenic Drive
Tekapo → Christchurch + campervan drop
Three hours, mostly Canterbury Plains. Drop the van at the airport JUCY depot before 18:00 to avoid the late fee.
29
18:00 - 18:30
Check-in
The George Christchurch
Hatley Square boutique facing Hagley Park — split two adjoining rooms. End-of-trip clean bed, room service options.
30
19:00 - 22:00
Craft Beer Crawl
Pomeroy's → Brewery → Inati
Pomeroy's for the British-pub-meets-craft-beer pre-game, then Riverside Market's Brewery for the second round, then dinner at Inati (small-plates, communal counter). Pomeroy's has 25 taps; ask for the Cassels Milk Stout.
